Still life painting class at Michaels

This month all the Michaels Makers took a class at their local Michaels store. I’ve been wanting to get back into painting so I took an acrylics still life class!

The class came with a supplies list, which was all handily included in this starter kit (which I used a 50% off coupon on)

The kit included primary colors and white, as well as two canvases and the brushes I needed for the class.

The instructor set up the still life and we started painting!

I got lots of great information about the paint, how to get the colors i wanted, how to manipulate the midtones, and highlights etc.

Overall it was super relaxing to just sit and paint for a few hours.

And I felt like i learned a new skill that I would love to sit and practice with a still life composition of my own.

I had a blast taking a painting class at Michaels. There are so many other classes, I was surprised at how many different things you can learn there. Did you know that Michaels offers free classes in their stores? You can try out a new craft skill for just the cost of supplies.

Another great way to explore your creativity is by trying out a craft kit. Michaels has everything from sewing kits to art kits and everything in between.

Mother’s Day Gifts – Bookmark DIY + Pendants

April 1st, 2016

Mother’s Day is coming up and I love to make DIY gift. Every time I go into Michaels I see the jewelry section and want to buy all the cute charms and beads. I spotted these gorgeous natural stone pendants and knew that would be a super easy gift when paired with a gold plated 18″ chain. Done!

I also saw these cute little charms and knew they would make an adorable bookmark. So I picked up some ribbon and these clamp closures.

First I attached the clamp closures to the ends of the 16″ long ribbon using plyers.

Then I attached the charms to each end using jump rings and pliers.

I love how it turned out! This would be a great teacher gift if you included your favorite book. And of course great for your mom or grandma or sister on mothers day!

decorating with monograms

February 1st, 2016

If you’ve walked into a Michaels lately, you have probably seen the gorgeousness that is their new Make Market section, and my favorite part is the “Alphabet Soup” selections. I adore all things monogram, and I might have bought a little of each style.  Here’s some of my favorites, but there were even more gorgeous and awesome alphabets and other items too.

I have been meaning to do some decorating in my son’s room, so I grabbed some items specifically for that. I especially loved these fabric monograms and added a cute little hexagon vase – also from Michaels, on a few vintage books.

And I loved these colored letters – they had tons of colors, so I spelled out my son’s name.

Even these cute little chalkboard crates were in the Make market. Perfect for his favorite books.

And I might have grabbed a few things for me. Like this monogram tray in aqua! I love it on my nightstand to collect all those little odds and ends.

And these large acrylic monograms are so cool too! I love how so many of these items are great for just go-to home decor.

I can’t wait to take a look at some of the fun projects on or the other 49 Makers’ ideas on The Glue String for to see how they personalized their crafts!
